Nairobi Stew – A Microgranting Community Dinner

Nairobi Stew – A Microgranting Community Dinner

Can we create change in our community? Lets start with a night of crowdfunding, music, food and community action!

Nairobi Stew is a community dinner funding microgrants for community projects. RSVP here for the next edition on Wednesday August 15th and apply to pitch here.

It is built on the belief that 500 ksh, 4 pitches, stew and a vote is all you need to make incredible things happen in your community. The Nairobi Stew series is inspired by the soup movement, which began with Detroit Soup in 2010 and has spread around the world since.

This is the fifth event in the series, but the Nairobi Stew community has supported initiatives such as employment creation for women through upcycling of water hyacinth, training facilities for children performing arts in Mukuru, a bone carving workshop and a book club for juvenile offenders through a crowdfunded microgrant and other volunteered resources.

How does it work?

For a suggested donation of 500 ksh, attendees receive a bowl of stew and a vote, and hear from four presentations ranging from art, urban agriculture, social justice, social entrepreneurs, education, technology and more. Each presenter has four minutes to share their idea and answer four questions from the audience. At the event, attendees eat, talk, share resources, enjoy art and vote on the project they think benefits the city the most. At the end of the night, we count the ballots and the winner goes home with all of the money raised to carry out their project. Winners will then come back to a future Stew dinner to report their project’s progress.

Want to pitch about your project at Nairobi Stew?

Great! The application form can be found here. Please take a moment to read our guidelines and application process before submitting your form. If your proposal is chosen, you’ll have 4 minutes to pitch it to the Stew community. The pitcher that wins the popular vote takes home the crowdfunded microgrant.
